IRS Notice CP501 is a reminder notice sent after the initial CP14 to let you know you still have an unpaid balance on your tax account. As the second notice in the IRS balance due sequence, CP501 signals that the IRS is continuing its collections process and expects payment. Although it is still relatively early in the process, continuing to ignore IRS notices will lead to progressively more serious actions — including tax liens, wage garnishments, and bank levies. Responding to a CP501 promptly gives you the best window to arrange an installment agreement, negotiate a settlement, or pursue other tax relief programs before the IRS escalates further.

If you owe the IRS more than $10,000 or if you haven’t filed your taxes for a while, it’s a smart move to talk to a tax expert before you contact the IRS. You don’t have to have a lawyer, but having a professional on your side can protect your rights because the IRS can be tough to deal with. Many people don’t know they have rights that can help them. We understand that many of our clients are going through tough financial times. We spread the total fee over the time we work on your case, which is usually about four months, but some cases may take longer, up to 14 months. We'll make sure the cost of our help is something you can afford.
A CP501 is the IRS's second reminder that you have an outstanding balance due on your tax account. It follows the initial CP14 notice and indicates that the IRS has not received payment or a response. The CP501 restates the amount owed — including updated penalties and interest — and urges you to pay or contact the IRS to make arrangements. While CP501 is not the most urgent notice in the sequence, it is a clear signal that the IRS is escalating its collection efforts.
CP501 is the second notice in the IRS balance due sequence, following the CP14. While it is not yet a levy or seizure notice, it is an important warning that the IRS will continue to escalate. After CP501, the IRS may send CP503 and CP504 (intent to levy your state refund), and eventually a Final Notice of Intent to Levy such as CP90 or Letter 1058. Responding to a CP501 now gives you the most time and the widest range of resolution options before more severe collection actions begin.
